Company history

Thomas Clarkson & Sons Ltd was registered in June 1932 with its registered office at 48 Snow Hill, Wolverhampton, Staffordshire. The business had been in existence since the 17th century. The Clarkson family were first recorded as clockmakers in London in 1640. In 1755, Hewitt Clarkson moved the business to Cock Street, Wolverhampton, Staffordshire. The family continued to trade there successfully, manufacturing long-case clocks. In about 1780, the business moved to Dudley Street, later known as Snow Hill, in Wolverhampton. In 1840, in response to the declining popularity of long-case clocks, the family founded a furniture business at Snow Hill. In 1871, it acquired the freehold of the premises.

In 1960, the company was bought by Army & Navy Stores Ltd, and, in 1965, the company's registered office was changed to 105 Victoria Street, Westminster, London. Around this time, the store was demolished and rebuilt. The company ceased to trade in January 1974 and was liquidated in 1978.
